There are some young quarterbacks on the Philadelphia Eagles roster that have a lot of potential and Michael Vick should be concerned about that.
Vick has not had an impressive season since 2010, where he put up Pro Bowl numbers and led the Eagles to a playoff berth. After the 2010 season, the Eagles believed they had their guy at quarterback and signed him to a six-year, $100 million contract prior to the 2011 season.
However, ever since he signed that contract, he has been inconsistent and has only won 10 games in the past two years. Vick is coming off one of his worst seasons and has showed he cannot stay healthy on a weekly basis. He still struggles to read defenses even at the age of 33. He is constantly putting his team in a bad situation by turning the ball over at worst times, whether it’s in the red zone or late in the fourth quarter.
Now Vick has all the talent in the world, but we have not seen that talent since 2010. He can throw the ball anywhere on the field accurately and still has the athletic ability to make defenders miss. Vick has an extremely quick release and puts a nice zip on the ball. However, none of these qualities matters if he can’t make the right decisions.
Chip Kelly’s offense is built around a quarterback who can think on his toes and can make the right choices. He needs a quarterback who can read the defense and make the right corrections while putting the ball where only the receiver can get it. All these things are what Vick has struggled with in years past.
Another thing is that Vick absolutely should not win the starting job just because he’s the fastest quarterback on the field. I know that Kelly has been investing 10 minutes every practice with the quarterbacks running the read option, but do you honestly think he’s going to run the read option with Vick?
Vick is as injury prone as it gets and if he is the Eagles starting quarterback, why would Kelly expose his quarterback to injury like that? This means that speed and athletic ability shouldn’t be the main factor in this quarterback controversy since their most athletic quarterback gets hurt often, and since Nick Foles and Matt Barkley are slow as it gets.
At this time it’s hard to say who will win the quarterback job. Vick, Foles, and Barkley all have a legitimate chance on doing so, but this makes most of us believe that Kelly will wait it out all the way until the end of the pre-season to crown the starting quarterback. I’m not saying Vick won’t win the job, but it’s hard to support him after watching him over the past two seasons.
All in all, Vick should be worried about the starting job since there are loads of potential behind him.
