San Diego Chargers: Keenan Allen Could Start at Wide Receiver in 2013
The San Diego Chargers chose former California Golden Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen in round three of the 2013 NFL Draft. Allen finished his collegiate career as the all-time leader in receptions at California.
According to Michael Gehlken of utsandiego.com, Allen said, “I want to be a starter. I don’t want to watch. I want to be part of the moment. I don’t want to watch it.”
Malcom Floyd and Danario Alexander led San Diego in receiving yards in 2012. Alexander was tied with tight end Antonio Gates for the team lead with seven touchdown receptions while Floyd ranked third.
Floyd has played in all 16 games one time in his career, which happened in 2009, while Alexander had four knee surgeries since 2010, so there is no guarantee that they will stay healthy in 2013.
If Floyd and or Alexander go down with injuries, Allen would be in a battle with Vincent Brown, Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal for the opportunity to start. There was talk that Brown could have been a starter last season before he broke his ankle in a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys and missed the entire 2012 season.
Meachem is one of San Diego’s highest paid players, but is coming off his worst season as a pro when he had career lows in receiving yards and TD receptions.
Royal ranked seventh in the NFL with 91 receptions in 2008 when he played for the Denver Broncos and had five TD receptions that season. Royal started two games with San Diego last season, but is most effective as a punt returner. Royal didn’t even have 60 receptions in a season the past four years.
Allen has a chance to be a starter at some point in 2013 due to the injury history of Floyd and Alexander and according to Tom Krasovic of utsandiego.com Meachem could be traded this season.
