Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Biggest Impact Defenders
Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Players Who Could Make Most Impact On Defense In 2013
The Philadelphia Eagles' defense was an utter disaster last season. From the miscommunications in the secondary to the wide open running lanes that were afforded running backs due to the Wide-Nine system, no Eagles defender seemed to be on the same page at any point in 2012.
Due to such underachieving, many of the perceived key cogs on the defense were let go after under performing. Men such as highly touted Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Jason Babin were all sent packing as all were a main part of the problem in poor play of the defensive unit as a whole. Juan Castillo and Todd Bowles, the two defensive coordinators at different points in the season, were also let go as the defensive players did not seem to be responding to them in a positive light.
Out with the old and in with the new. In comes new defensive coordinator Billy Davis and with him he brings new ideas to get this Eagles defense back to being aggressive, something, quite frankly, fans haven't seen since the days of late great defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, who had the likes of Jeremiah Trotter and Brian Dawkins at his disposal. Davis will look to implement a 4-3 under hybrid defense which will show both 3-4 and 4-3 concepts depending on the in game situation. He will look to blitz his linebackers and secondary pieces more than ever in an effort to rattle the QB and be the aggressor.
This defense with Davis' new philosophy has a chance to make noise in 2013 and years to come. Let's take a look at 5 players who could make a major impact in 2013.
Connor Barwin Could Be A Terror Off The Edge In 2013
Connor Barwin comes over from the Houston Texans and is the only linebacker with experience in a 3-4. I predict he will get off to the fastest start out of the gate and eventually rack up double digit sacks in midnight green.
Brandon Graham Could Break Out Under New Defensive Coordinator Billy Davis
Brandon Graham exploded near the end of last season, racking up four sacks in his final five games and generating consistent pressure on the QB. He will look to continue this in Billy Davis' new pressure-based scheme. I expect a big year from Graham.
Cary Williams Could Bring His Super Bowl Pedigree To Eagles' secondary
Cary Williams comes over from the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens and was a key member of the defense in their Super Bowl run. He looks to bring playoff experience, veteran leadership and playmaking ability to a secondary that desperately needs it.
Demeco Ryans Could Bring Continued Leadership Outstanding Play At Middle Linebacker
Demeco Ryans, or "Meco" as his teammates call him, is the unquestioned leader of the defense. He is coming off an excellent season with the Eagles, and he will look to build on his success in his second year with the club.
Fletcher Cox Could Turn Into A Dominant Defensive Lineman In Hs Second Season
Fletcher Cox showed flashes of greatness in his rookie season. He is looking to build on this, become more consistent and make the transition into a star player along the defensive line.
