New York Jets Training Camp Profile: Zach Rogers

First-rounder Cordarrelle Patterson and second-rounder Justin Hunter get all the glory when it comes to Tennessee receivers in the 2013 draft class, and rightly so. Patterson is considered by many to have the best raw skills of any rookie receiver while Hunter can burn deep with anyone in this class.

However, the New York Jets may have found some solid receiver depth with the Vols’ forgotten target in 6-foot, 172-pound slot receiver Zach Rogers. The undrafted free agent joined Gang Green after tallying 491 yards and seven touchdowns in his final collegiate season.

The Star-Ledger called up Rogers’ receivers coach at Tennessee, Darin Hinshaw.

“After you watched the games, they all wanted to know about Zach,” said Hinshaw, now the passing game coordinator at Cincinnati. “And everybody said it: You got two good ones here, but Zach Rogers — I don’t want to say he’s going to be the best one — but the Jets are really going to like having him. … You can always count on Zach Rogers. The only reason he’s not super big-time is, he’s 180 pounds and — you know, he was just as fast as the other guys — and honestly, it’s because he’s white.”

The Star-Ledger notes that Hinshaw’s last line there was coupled with a laugh, so I’m guessing a joke there.

Many consider the Jets’ skill positions to be a joke and I’m not going to defend them too much. There are few better offensive depth charts in the league for an undrafrted free agent to rise up. Rogers could very well surprise as a slot man in 2013.

However, I would hardly peg Rogers for August camp starting reps quite yet as New York’s receiver spot isn’t all that bad in my opinion. Jeremy Kerley‘s a promising young player, a healthy Santonio Holmes can be a weapon and Stephen Hill‘s flashed some of the raw skills that make a dangerous deep threat. Now Rogers and his cohorts just need a competent passer.
