NFL Wrong To Not Promote Affordable Care Act

The Washington Post reported Friday that the NFL is bowing to anti-health care reform Republicans, and will not promote the Affordable Care Act as the law begins its next phase of educating millions of Americans of their enrollment options and preparing them to sign up for health insurance.

The corrupt and cowardly NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell have the opportunity to help implement the law of the land, but are refusing because a few Republican senators warned the league in a letter not to go along.

This isn’t about President Barack Obama or even Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who made the request, but a small group of right-wing Republicans who can’t get past the fact that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land.

Let me repeat: the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. That means promoting it should be no more controversial than educating Americans about Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid.

The league’s shameful refusal to help promote the health care reform law should come as no surprise. This is the same league that tolerates and promote the Washington Redskins‘ use of the racist word. But allowing a franchise to use a racial slur as their nickname is just the tip of the iceberg.

Remember the bounty scandal? What about the league’s special tax and legal treatment? Or playing an entire year without a collective bargaining agreement? Looking the other way when New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and others are caught cheating? What about for decades ignoring the safety of their players as concussions and other debilitating injuries devastate former athletes?

The NFL is wrong to not promote the Affordable Care Act, but Goodell and the league have much bigger problems to deal with than going along with the demands of anti-health care reform Republicans.
