Buffalo Bills Training Camp Profile: Jeff Tuel

Jeff Tuel

Timothy T. Ludwig – USA TODAY Sports

It was well documented that the Buffalo Bills selected E.J. Manuel in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft back in late April, however, what is lesser known is that they also brought in Jeff Tuel as an undrafted free agent. At 6-foot-3, 228 pounds, Tuel has good size for a QB, but it looked like he was going to be the fourth quarterback in a three-man race. However, on June 10 the Bills cut quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, thus giving Tuel the third-string spot by default.

Despite going undrafted, Tuel has impressed scouts and coaches since his pro day, where he earned a private invite from the New England Patriots and Bills; that might have likely swayed him to choose the Bills as his first pro landing spot. While he might not have the strongest arm in the league or throw the most accurate pass, Tuel has solid leadership after playing as an on-and-off four-year starter for the Washington State University Cougars. Tuel should also receive some solid polish from quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett if he stays on the roster beyond this preseason, and in time, he could back up Manuel after Kevin Kolb is gone.

All in all, it will interesting to see how Tuel progresses at Bills Training Camp, which starts on July 28. Will he land a spot on the Bills final 53-man roster? Time will tell but the odds are looking favorable for the rookie quarterback.
