You never know what to think when you hear New England Patriots‘ rumors. More than any other team in the leauge, the Patriots just don’t talk.
I actually liked their move to sign free agent quarterback Tim Tebow. He didn’t really fit in anywhere else in the league this year, and the Patriots were one of the few teams that could handle the circus that comes along with him. Speculation ran rampant from day one, mainly on whether or not Tebow would finally make the switch to tight end. Now it appears, he might not even make the roster at all.
The latest buzz from Pats’ camp is that the popular QB is a long-shot to make the final 53-man roster. This is apparently because he was brought in for no reason other than to compete with Ryan Mallett for the backup QB spot. New England typically doesn’t carry three QBs, so that fact supports the backup competition rumor.
I will understand if Tebow gets cut because of lack of roster spots, but not because he lost a battle to Mallett. I don’t think there’s anyone that would expect him to win that competition, and the Patriots would be dumb to cut a guy in Mallett that they could easily trade for assets down the road. Could this all just be a smokescreen to conceal New England’s true plans for Tebow? I suppose it’s possible.
It won’t be shocking if Tebow gets cut, but I’m also not buying that he was brought in just to compete for the backup QB spot. But then again it’s the Patriots, so who knows.
