Though Matt Ryan is firmly ensconced as the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and will be for years to come (Falcons and Falcons fans are banking on a major contract extension coming soon), nothing on the field is guaranteed. Contingency plans must be in place that can be executed if needed. Not to say that such plans will be called into play, but it’s never wrong to err on the side of caution in any position.
As far as quarterbacks go, that contingency plan for the Falcons has a name. That name is Dominique Davis, and those who are unfamiliar with him won’t be for long. Davis was admittedly a bit stunned during his own rookie training camp last year. However, he improved greatly during the following 2012 training camp and beyond. He’s already turned some heads during the minicamp in June, and aims to keep turning them during the upcoming training camp.
Being the backup to Ryan would be new for Davis only in the Falcons’ sense; he was Ryan’s backup at Boston College. That consideration aside, there are others who would welcome the opportunity to snag that number two position. Sean Renfree could be knocking on Davis’ door, but not enough to knock him from the number two position. One to watch for the future, but not the 2013 future.
No one (read: no Falcons fan) wants to consider the negative side of the ‘what-if’s’ of any season. Everyone can, however, rest assured that Davis will be ready, willing and able to step in and give an exemplary performance if necessary.
