New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan is Still Attention Worthy
This offseason has been unusually quiet for New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan. In years past Ryan would make bold declarations of his team emerging as Super Bowl champions. These same promises have not come from Ryan’s mouth in recent months and for good reason.
The Jets suffered through turmoil last season where a lack of offensive talent was coupled with tremendous media coverage. Entering 2013 expectations are low yet again at least from the outside. While Ryan has not touted how good this team will be, he has demonstrated an ability to still be interesting.
A family vacation saw him engage in running with the bulls in Spain. Unfortunately 23 were injured and New York’s head coach was lucky to escape such danger. Seeking such thrill shows that there is a unique dynamic when it comes to this man’s personality. Over the last four years members of one of America’s largest media markets proceeded to bond with Ryan. For better or worse, gatherings between coach and reporter always are captivating. During another vacation to the Bahamas someone with a camera phone captured quarterback Mark Sanchez’s face tattooed on Ryan’s arm. Even when the Jets are not winning extra developments keep them relevant.
One problem that owner Woody Johnson seemed to have with former coach Eric Mangini was that his low key demeanor failed to both spark the team and generate headlines. When change arrived this unique character also brought dominating defense. Despite this toned down attitude Ryan continues to carry himself in a way that stands out from others.
