Is Vonta Leach’s Asking Price Coming Down?

The New York Giants were among a handful of teams vying for the services of former Baltimore Ravens’ FB Vonta Leach. The Giants have a limited amount of money left to spend, so it was thought that a deal with Leach would be a little difficult. The Giants took care of their biggest offseason priority, which was to lock down WR Victor Cruz to a long-term contract.

A couple of weeks ago, I felt the Giants shouldn’t entertain bringing in Leach because he might be an expensive fullback, a position the Giants shouldn’t spend a lot of money on considering the other long-term deals they’ll need to settle in the future. At this point, I expected Leach to have already been signed with a team, most notably with the Miami Dolphins.

However, Leach remains on the open market. So that leaves me to wonder. Are teams not willing to pay what Leach wants? If so, that gives the Giants a chance to swoop back into negotiating with Leach to see if he can take a deal closer to the minimum. The fullback position probably isn’t a long-term need for the Giants as incumbent FB Henry Hynoski is recovering from injury.

However, it couldn’t hurt for the Giants to see if Leach can help out the running game, considering the Giants will rely on two young running backs in RB David Wilson and RB Andre Brown in the upcoming season. It remains to be seen if the Giants will look to join the pursuit of Leach again. It isn’t known if they ever left the pursuit, but there hasn’t been any news out of Leach’s camp lately.

I still believe the Dolphins are the most likely suitor for him. However, the Giants could be a surprise.
