Miami Dolphins Are Not Going To Sign Fullback Vonta Leach?
It’s crazy to think that one of the best, if not the best, fullbacks in the NFL won’t be on a team at the start of the 2013 NFL training camp season. For Super Bowl champion and former Baltimore Raven‘s fullback Vonta Leach, that appears to be the case.
Reports surfaced this morning that the Miami Dolphins are not going to sign Leach to a deal and will instead see how the fullbacks they have on roster now, Javorskie Lane and Charles Clay, pan out before they move forward. According to reports, the Dolphins will look back to their options with Leach if those players don’t pan out like they hope.
If the Dolphins think that Vonta Leach will be available if their options don’t work out, they’re delusional. While Leach may not be on a team at the start of training camp, he will certainly be picked up shortly thereafter. While the need for fullbacks in the NFL have declined overtime, a fullback like Leach is hard to pass up.
Leach has been in the NFL for nine years. He spent one season with the Green Bay Packers before spending five seasons with the Houston Texans and the past two with the Ravens. More and more each season, Leach became a more important part of the offense, primarily in the passing game. Last season, he had 21 receptions for 143 yards. He was also responsible for picking up seven first downs.
While both the Ravens and Leach wanted to stay together and work a deal out for the 2013 season, a difference in how much the Ravens were willing to pay Leach was the demise of those contract negotiations. Both sides have said they want to work a deal out, but the Ravens remain that that won’t happen until Leach’s price comes down. Other teams that have reportedly expressed interest in Leach are the New York Giants and the Texans.
The Miami Dolphins are missing out by not signing Vonta Leach. It could likely be that they feel they won’t get enough return on their investment and that is why they won’t be signing him in the near future. Don’t, however, expect Leach to sit on his couch at home for very long.
