It’s not very often that a talent like Da’Rick Rogers slips through the cracks, even with a spotted off-field history like his.

The Buffalo Bills, though, love the fact that he didn’t hear his name called last April because they got a potential starting wide receiver for the price of a roster longshot. As long as he can stay out of trouble in the NFL, Rogers won’t have any problems becoming a contributor for the Bills.

With all of the physical tools needed to be an elite wide receiver, Rogers is a dynamic pass-catcher capable of putting up big numbers on any given Sunday. The crutch that has crippled his football career has been an inability to keep his head on straight off the field.

Rogers began his college ball at Tennessee, but lasted only a season after three failed drug tests forced the Volunteers to kick him off the team. He continued on at Tennessee Tech, where he routinely dominated lesser competition and reportedly passed over 10 drug tests. It was said during the pre-draft process, though, that coaches at Tennessee Tech had issues with Rogers’ attitude.

Even after joining the Bills, Rogers raised some red flags during OTAs after receiving a scolding from head coach Doug Marrone for taunting cornerback Ron Brooks following a touchdown. Buffalo clearly has him on a short leash, but are willing to give him the necessary nurturing to bring out the immense potential the undrafted rookie possesses.

In the end, the deciding factor will be whether or not Rogers can learn to conduct himself like a pro. He has the natural talent to be an impact player in the NFL, but might not be able to overcome his immense amount of immaturity.

If Rogers can stay clean and out of Marrone’s dog house, the Bills got a future star in the undrafted rookie.
