Robert Griffin III Medically Cleared for Training Camp
Well, Robert Griffin III did his best Adrian Peterson impersonation this offseason. Griffin announced on Twitter that he would be medically cleared for practice at the start of training camp on July 25. Griffin is just six months removed from tearing his ACL and LCL in the playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks last year. The speedy recovery is truly remarkable as RG III was expected to start training camp on the PUP list and was highly questionable for Week 1 of the regular season.
While the news is extremely encouraging for Washington Redskins fans, don’t expect Griffin to be looking like him old self just yet. According to Griffin, coaches will “ease him in” to the offense as the last thing they want to do is risk re-injuring their franchise player. The coaching staff already took a lot of heat for keeping Griffin in their playoff game last season after being visibly injured during the game.
Griffin is coming off NFL Rookie of the Year honors where he passed for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, while also picking up 815 rushing yards (most by a QB last year) and seven rushing touchdowns. Griffin led the Redskins to their first playoff appearance since 2007-08 and has clearly turned around the fortunes of the Redskins franchise.
It will be in interesting to see how/if the Redskins change up the play calling this year. It would seem as if they will not give Griffin as many designed run plays for him, but luckily, he’s just as gifted a passer as he is a runner.
