The Baltimore Ravens may have dodged a huge bullet in their first regular season game.
It appears as if star pass rusher for the Denver Broncos, Von Miller, may be suspended for the first four games of the season. Assuming the suspension holds up against the appeal process, that means Miller will miss opening night in Denver against the defending Super Bowl Champions.
As a fan of the Ravens, I couldn’t be any more thrilled with this news. A certain colleague of mine thinks it doesn’t make a difference anyway, but I beg to differ.
Miller and Elvis Dumervil formed one of the the most feared pass rushing tandems for the past two seasons. We all know Dumervil will now be playing with the good guys (that’d be the Ravens, of course) and with Miller potentially gone, Denver will be missing two guys who combined for 30 sacks.
I’d say that’s a good thing if you’re a Ravens fan.
Now it may sound like I’m gloating (I am) but I have the right to. Assuming Miller misses the game, it will be because of his own stupidity and not because of an unfortunate injury. He is apparently being suspended for messing around with stuff you should just say no to. I have no sympathy for the man.
Before this news came out, I was leaning on picking Denver for the opening game. The chances for the Ravens winning have definitely gone up.
The Broncos, even with Miller and Dumervil, couldn’t create much of a pass rush in the playoff classic from last year. Joe Flacco took full advantage and had the game of his life. I’ve always said that Flacco can look like Joe Montana when he has time, but more like Kyle Boller when he’s under duress.
Even with Miller gone, it still won’t be easy to beat the Broncos in Denver on opening night, but I’m feeling a lot better about the game now.
