No one could have predicted that the Dallas Cowboys would lose four of their 14 defensive linemen to injury in the first four days of training camp, however, that’s exactly what happened.
On Saturday, while participating in the conditioning test the Cowboys lost defensive tackle Jay Ratliff to a hamstring injury; On Sunday, the Cowboys lost defensive end Tyrone Crawford for the season due to a torn Achilles’ tendon; On Tuesday, the team announced that starting defensive end Anthony Spencer was going to miss about a month due to knee surgery and that defensive tackle Ikponmwosa Igbinosun would miss some time with an ankle injury.
Certainly not the way the Cowboys wanted to start training camp, but luckily for them these injuries have come early enough that if need be, the team can still go out and find decent players.
The Cowboys had been adamant about bringing in free agents to fill said voids, but as of Wednesday, it appears that they have changed their mind after the team agreed to deals with defensive end George Selvie and defensive tackle Landon Cohen.
Since coming into the NFL as a seventh round pick of the St. Louis Rams, the 6-4 270 lbs. Selvie, has bounced around the league, most recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over his career Selvie has amassed 42 tackles and three sacks.
Cohen, a seventh round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2008, hasn’t played since 2011, but spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. His best season as a pro came in 2009 as a member of the Lions when he registered 21 tackles over 14 games.
Neither signing is intended to wow anyone, and shouldn’t be seen as more than the Cowboys simply adding some veteran depth. To make room on the roster for Cohen, the team cut wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei, who failed his conditioning test on Saturday.
