We all knew it was only a matter of time before the Atlanta Falcons and Matt Ryan came to an agreement on a new contract. With Joe Flacco receiving a mega payday, Matty Ice was next in line after winning his first playoff game and getting the Falcons to the NFC Championship game a season ago.
The extension is reportedly for five years and $103.75 million, including $59 million. This means that Ryan will average more than $20 million per season under his new deal.
If you’re the Falcons, there’s really no other option here but to lock this guy long-term. Franchise quarterbacks don’t come around all that often, so locking him up is the only move to make. It’s been a fairly difficult journey for Ryan to get to this point, but he’s earned this extension.
It’s with this new deal that the Falcons are looking ahead to not only 2013, but also many seasons in the future. It’s great that they got this out of the way before the season began, that way it’s not hanging over the everyone’s head. It’s clear that Atlanta wants to start a dynasty with Ryan at the center of everything.
The Falcons’ offense is an elite unit that’s not going anywhere. Now, they’ve got the most crucial piece to the offense on the books for many years to come. This contract extension should speak volumes to Ryan, as it lets him know that the franchise is 100% behind him.
