It’s probably a bit of an understatement to say that there’s been significantly less attention on the guy wearing the #15 jersey at New York Jets training camp this year.

Former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ben Obomanu is the lucky man wearing Tim Tebow‘s old threads in camp this year, having signed with the Jets in May.

Jets rookie general manager John Idzik is very familiar with Obomanu from their days in Seattle together, and felt comfortable taking a flier on him this summer.

Among others, Obomanu is competing for a roster spot with another ex-Seahawks receiver, Braylon Edwards, who signed with the Jets just before camp last week.

With the calendar about to turn to August, the Jets have a dozen healthy wide receivers competing in camp, of which an expected five or six will make the team.

A depth guy and career-backup for most of his NFL career, Obomanu nevertheless has averaged a solid 13.9 yards per reception on 87 career receptions in 66 games.

But the former seventh-round draft pick’s bread-and-butter has always been his work on special teams. He was always a staple of strong special teams units in Seattle.

Obomanu’s got an interesting skill-set, and seems to be the type of player who can get behind a defense and make a big play as a third or fourth-option in the passing game.

His ability to play special teams could give him an inside track at winning one of those backup receiver spots. Unlike last year, #15 has a chance to really contribute in 2013.
