Everyone knows by now that Jeremy Maclin tore his ACL. He was reportedly in the middle of 7 on 7 drills when it happened. I used to be a ball boy for the Philadelphia Eagles back in the day. I was there when former Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter tore his ACL for the first time. I say for the first time, because that poor dude tore his ACL multiple times. I will never forget the sound it made. It was like a gun went off.
I feel for Maclin, who led the Eagles with 69 receptions for 857 yards and seven touchdowns in just 15 games last season. Here is a guy doing the right thing about being at camp on time, despite going into his last year on his rookie contract. He could have easily held out like some do in this situation. The Eagles and Maclin had preliminary talks, though they obviously didn’t go so well. When Maclin was asked about his contract situation he said that he would let his performance do the talking this season.
Under Andy Reid the passing offense was built around DeSean Jackson. Under Chip Kelly its an equal opportunity offense and that had Maclin very excited. He was expecting big things from himself. Obviously, now that won’t come to fruition.
I can’t sit here and say that the former 2009 first-round pick has been a great receiver, though he has been a solid one. He has averaged 65 catches and 863 yards per season since being drafted by the Eagles. What I will say is that he deserved better for doing the right thing by not holding out.
Here is Maclin’s statement on twitter:
Appreciate all the love and support twitter fam….sad day but I have setbacks my entire life. Minor setback … http://t.co/DiFGrrmI5D
