The injury bug may have paid an early visit to Jacksonville Jaguars training camp on Monday.
Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert was carted off of the practice field after suffering an injury to his right ankle. After practice, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said that it was a sprained ankle that happened when he got stepped on by right guard Uche Nwaneri.
While the severity of the injury is unknown, it will certainly throw a wrench in the Jaguars quarterback competition if it keeps Gabbert out of practice for an extended amount of time. The Jaguars coaching staff was hoping that Gabbert, a former first-round draft pick, would step up in training camp in what many view as his final opportunity to show he is capable of developing into a quality NFL quarterback.
Gabbert has been splitting first-team reps with Chad Henne, who appears to be his prime competition for the Jaguars starting quarterback job. With Gabbert out, Henne now has a golden opportunity to step up and distance himself in the quarterback competition.
Through the first four days of practice, none of the Jaguars four quarterbacks have really distinguished themselves from the pack. All of them have had their good moments, but all have had their problems and it is still way too early to handicap the competition.
At this point, the Jaguars are going to treat Gabbert’s injury as day-to-day but it is hard to envision a scenario in which he does not miss at least a few days of practice while he recovers.
