Houston Texans Should Take It Easy With Arian Foster

Houston Texans Will Only Go As Far As Arian Foster Takes Them

Thomas Campbell-USA TODAY Sports

There’s rarely a dull moment around this point of the offseason for Arian Foster. Houston Texans fans have gotten used to the usual sense of angst ever since the summer following his breakout year, when Foster tweeted out image of the white stuff in his knee known as “anti-awesome” to the medical community. Some injury story is bound to creep up and gain steam with Foster as preseason gets under way each year, and each year he hits Week 1 running quite fine.

These stories, and Foster’s 2013 chapter about an iffy calf muscle, all evaporate by the first time he piles into the end zone.

ESPN injury expert Stephania Bell explained why it’s very encouraging that Foster is expected to come off the PUP list this week. “I think the Texans are going to approach Arian Foster with what you expect: which is caution,” Bell said on the latest ESPN Fantasy Focus podcast. Bell also warned against bringing him back too quickly and Foster having another early-season hamstring issue as in the past, but Bell is not too worried about these recent calf concerns. ESPN fantasy expert Matthew Berry went on to say that Foster gives him the “heeby-jeebies”.

What perhaps might be most concerning is the fact that Foster’s yards per carry average has dropped from 4.9 to 4.4 to 4.1 over the past three years and that he’s compiled more than 1,110 touches in that time span, a worrisome workload regardless of age. If Foster fails to deliver top-five fantasy value in 2013, I believe that would be the much more likely culprit.

Texans Actually Tried J.J. Watt At QB

There's something to be said for pulling out all the stops and using every trick play in the book to win a playoff game, but bringing in J.J. Watt to play quarterback in the wildcat formation was probably a giveaway that he would be running the ball.
