Injuries are one of the most unfortunate incidents in sports, but sadly they happen often and can strike at any time. New Orleans Saints linebacker Martez Wilson suffered a setback as he injured his elbow during the team’s training camp. Wilson is expected to be out for 2-4 weeks, which is fortunate when you compare his injury to Victor Butler’s torn ACL.
This is only a minor setback for Wilson and the Saints as he will likely miss most of the preseason, but more importantly, he should be ready for the start of the regular season. The injury is unfortunate because Wilson was primed to have a breakout season as the new edge rusher for the Saints’ 3-4 defense. However, now Wilson will have to watch from the sidelines as he recovers.
Despite his injury, Wilson figures to be one of the key components of a revamped Saints’ defense looking to improve upon last year’s historically bad performance. Once Wilson comes back healthy, he will likely be slated as the starting strong side linebacker, and is expected to vastly improve the Saints’ pass-rush. Wilson is a young athletic linebacker looking to make his mark in the NFL and that could happen this season.
No doubt there will be some growing pains and Wilson might be learning on the job a bit, but he is strong and fast and that should enable him to make some plays and get a few sacks. Wilson will be an important part of the Saints’ linebacking corps this season, and once he comes back from his injury, he will be ready to go to work.
