New Orleans Saints Rumors: Left Tackle Spot Still up for Grabs?

Since the departure of Jermon Bushrod, the New Orleans Saints’ offensive line has looked a little shaky with so many question marks about who would replace him. Now that training camp is underway, there are still three candidates that can win the starting left tackle spot. Charles Brown, Terron Armstead and Jason Smith are the top players in line to be the new starting tackle. However, it appears that this could come down to a two-horse race.

Brown has impressive so far with the first-team reps during training camp and looks to be the leading candidate to start. Smith has been more of a place holder to provide depth and his roster spot is far from guaranteed. Then we have one of the most interesting rookie prospects the Saints have in Armstead.

It has been said that Armstead has significantly created separation between himself and Smith, and is locked in as the back-up left tackle. However, if Armstead gains momentum, he could overtake Brown for the starting left tackle spot. As far as I’m concerned this left tackle spot is still up for grabs even if Brown looks to be the starter right now.

Brown has a history of injuries and ultimately, if he cannot stay healthy, Armstead will be the starting left tackle for the Saints. This is one of the biggest battles of training camp and both players will be scrutinized as they vie for the job of protecting Drew Brees’ blindside. Even if Brown ultimately wins the starting spot he is one injury away from losing it. Furthermore, Armstead looks like he might be the left tackle of the future.

No matter who starts at left tackle this season, they will have some big shoes to fill, and will need to ensure that the Saints still maintain one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Brown might be leading the race for now, but Armstead is coming on strong and this could go down to the wire.
