New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Looking To To Fill WR Spont With Laurent Robinson?

Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports

Free agent and former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Laurent Robinson is reportedly going to be visiting New Orleans on Monday for a workout. With Marques Colston still on the PUP list and Joe Morgan suffering a foot injury at Saturday’s scrimmage, the New Orleans Saints might be looking to fill out some of their receiver spots with a veteran free agent acquisition or two.

Robinson spent last year with the Jaguars and had a mostly insignificant outing with only 252 receiving yards on 24 catches. Granted, he was playing for Jacksonville — the league-wide textbook definition for mediocrity. In 2011, he had 858 receiving yards off of 54 receptions as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The ability is there, and at 6-foot-2 with speed, Robinson might be a good fit in New Orleans.

He won’t become the NFL‘s latest, greatest thing, but I think he would work well enough in a system that spreads the wealth and keeps defenses on their toes. Sean Payton has the ability to keep the offense rolling on the field with advantageous matchups and great looks. If Robinson were to sign with the Saints, I would expect him to find a place in the offense rather quickly.

Who knows, maybe Robinson could record his first 1,000 yard receiving season in his career as a member of the Saints. Lance Moore recently did so last season with Brees under center, and Colston has done so six times since he joined New Orleans in 2006. Could the Saints be looking at three wide receivers who could potentially rack up 1,000 yards receiving each?
