When you go down the list of players the Jacksonville Jaguars can least afford to lose, third-year wide receiver Cecil Shorts might be on top of that list.

The Jaguars, who have had relatively good luck with injuries so far in training camp, saw Shorts leave practice early on Monday with what is being described as a strained left calf muscle. Shorts pulled up lame after running a deep route and spent the rest of practice on the sideline with a bag of ice on his calf.

Shorts’ injury does not appear to be serious, but they can ill-afford to lose him for any period of time especially with Justin Blackmon already out for the first four games of the season due to suspension. If for some reason the Jaguars were without Shorts for an extended period of time, they would be forced to turn to some inexperienced options to fill the void.

Luckily for the Jaguars, two young guys are starting to emerge in training camp and have been taking significant reps with the first-team offense with Blackmon out. Both Ace Sanders and Mike Brown have impressed in camp and are likely to see significant time in the preseason as the Jaguars try to figure out who will play opposite of Shorts over the first four weeks in the season.

The Jaguars open their preseason schedule at home on Friday night against the Miami Dolphins and it is unknown if this injury will prevent Shorts from playing, but he was unlikely to play a significant amount of snaps anyways so the team might err on the side of caution with their star wide receiver.
