Prior to training camp, the Philadelphia Eagles invested a good amount of time and money trying to revamp their secondary. Well we got to see a little bit of that secondary when the New England Patriots had a joint practice with the Birds this week, and it wasn’t pretty.

The secondary was absolutely torched by Tom Brady, and some defensive backs looked pretty lost when they hit the field. However, there was one player that stood out and showed some consistency and that was cornerback Brandon Boykin. We all know that Boykin came on the scene last season and really had a great rookie year playing in the slot. He proved he could take on top receivers like Anquan Boldin and Victor Cruz as he showed that he isn’t afraid to come up and make a hit. It seemed like new defensive coordinator Billy Davis saw a lot of potential in the young corner and decided to plug the former Georgia Bulldog in on the outside as a starting cornerback. Boykin displayed quick feet and good instincts against Brady and the Patriots receivers which has improved his stock on becoming the new starting cornerback for the Eagles.

The new Eagles cornerbacks Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher have been inconsistent this training camp. Williams seems like he has seen the trainers more than the field this season since he has injuries left and right. Williams was also pulled from the joint practice with the Patriots for “extracurriculars”. This means he was probably running his mouth and some pushing and shoving after the play was over. You know, the same ole’ Cary Williams like we seen playing for the Baltimore Ravens. Williams is slowly getting on the coaches’ bad side with all these “injuries” and nonsense on the field which means that he may lose his spot this season if he doesn’t step it up. And the one guy that can take his spot is certainly Boykin.

Boykin will have a chance to showcase his ability playing on the outside Friday night against Brady and the Patriots which will be a good test for him. If he proves to the coaches he can do it then Williams or Bradley may be in trouble for their starting positions.
