When news first broke that left tackle Bryan Bulaga would be out of the Green Bay Packers for the entire 2013 NFL season, my thoughts immediately went to Eddie Lacy. Finding holes as a rookie running back is difficult enough, but now Lacy will have to run behind one of the worst offensive lines in the entire league. Also, with Bulaga out of action the Packers are naturally forced to find another way to protect Aaron Rodgers from getting a concussion six times a season.
In case you forgot, the Green Bay offensive line was pitiful in 2012 as it allowed Rodgers to get sacked a league-worst 51 times. Therefore, the Packers’ running backs will have to pick up a lot of the slack and do what they can in the backfield. Lacy was drafted in the second round for a reason and his 231-pound frame will be used to help keep Rodgers on his feet.
Everyone wants to talk about his fantasy football outlook, but Lacy’s rookie season will be judged by his pass-protection skills at the end of the day.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy has a ton of offensive weapons, yet he knows that if Rodgers goes down for a long period of time then the Packers are doomed. With that being said, keep an eye on Lacy as his rookie campaign will feature a ton of pass-blocking assignments that he must complete.
