How Did Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Johnthan Banks Perform vs. Baltimore Ravens?
Last night, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Johnthan Banks made his NFL debut against the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. Now the starters usually don’t play much the first week, but in the two drives Banks playeed, he lead with five tackles. He didn’t really make any plays with the pass defense, but I was really impressed on how he played with the rush defense.
Coach Greg Schiano said that Banks was one of the guys at cornerback that showed up. With Banks’ performance from last night, I think that he is getting even closer to earn the starting role at the cornerback position.
Leonard Johnson is currently starting at cornerback in front of Banks. I’m predicting that Banks will start at the cornerback position at some point this season unless Danny Gorrer or Johnson break out at the position.
Darrelle Revis did not play last night, though this is nothing to worry about as the Bucs coaching staff just wants to ease him back into the league slowly. Gorrer started in his place and did well, having a nice interception off of Joe Flacco. With Gorrer’s good performance last night, I think that the cornerback battle is now even tighter.
The Bucs’ next game is on Friday at the New England Patriots, you should see the starters getting a little bit more playing time and if Revis plays, the three cornerbacks’ playing time will probably be split up. If Banks wants to win the job early, he’s going to have to make the most of the time he is given.
