Greg Salas may not just earn a roster spot with his play at training camp and early in the preseason, but he may be playing himself into a significant role with the Philadelphia Eagles. Injuries have devastated the wide receiver position and Salas has made the most of his opportunity in stepping up to fill some of his injured teammates shoes.
Salas has consistently made highlight reel-type catches, and in the game came up with a beauty late in the fourth quarter that had the crowd ooing and aahing. Salas was once property of the New England Patriots and he showed his old team what they were missing out on last night as he was certainly the Eagles most consistent receiver.
Salas is not a burner. He does, however, run very precise routes, is quick in and out of his cuts and has great hands to snag even errant throws from the quarterback. He is in the mold of a Wes Welker or Danny Amendola in his route-running ability and ball-catching skills, although he still needs to prove himself in this league to be on that level. Salas, who may have been a long shot to make the squad before injuries took their toll on the wide receiver group, now not only has a chance to stick, but to be a productive member of the offense.
Salas has good size, great hands and is also a solid blocker down field which head coach Chip Kelly covets in a wide receiver. The Eagles’ depth is being tested at a few positions, but most notably at the receiver spot. Salas has come in and shined so far in camp and the preseason. Will his success translate into a roster spot and a major contribution on offense when it really counts? Stay tuned.
