Quarterback Controversy Brewing For Washington Redskins

Don McPeak-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins entered the 2013 preseason focused on the health of quarterback Robert Griffin III. Redskins’ head coach Mike Shanahan will most likely keep RG3 on the sidelines until Washington opens the 2013 NFL season at home against the Philadelphia Eagles. Reserve quarterbacks Kirk Cousins, Rex Grossman and Pat White (above, tossing the ball to running back Evan Royster),  will handle the preseason quarterbacking duties in RG3’s absence.

The statuses of RG3 and Cousins are indisputable. They are the first and second quarterbacks listed on the Redskins’ depth chart. The real battle will be for the third quarterback spot between Grossman and White. Grossman completed only 10 of 21 passes during Washington’s first preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. White made plays with his arm and his legs, completing five of eight passes and rushing for 33 yards. He also scored a rushing touchdown, as well as completing a pass to tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi for the two point conversion that provided the margin of victory.

Yes, I know you can’t gauge quarterback performance after only one preseason game.  However, there has to be some disappointment in Grossman’s poor performance. Although not an elite quarterback by any stretch, Grossman was efficient enough to start 47 games for the Redskins and the Chicago Bears during his 10 year career. He also led the Bears to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season, losing to the Indianapolis Colts. Grossman’s resume seems to suggest that he’ll be assured a roster spot for 2013.

Not so fast. Washington’s offense seemed to gel with White, who had been out of the NFL for three years after being released by the Miami Dolphins after the 2009 season. Granted, White’s performance came against a Titans’ defense filled with fourth and fifth string defenders trying to make the NFL, as is White. Nevertheless, you have to make the most of your opportunities when you get them. White did just that, performing well enough to get recognition.

But I digress. The reality is, the Redskins are in deep trouble if either White or Grossman saw significant playing time during the upcoming regular season. The team will need a solid third string quarterback in case RG3 and Cousins were both somehow unable to play. How that battle shapes up will only add intrigue to an already intriguing Washington Redskins’ team.
