Gary Guyton: A smart signing for Tennessee Titans

Especially as injured list starts to grow, veteran experience can be invaluable in the NFL.

Currently short on linebackers, the Tennessee Titans went out on Sunday and gave a one-year deal to Gary Guyton, who should provide some quality depth and experience as the preseason rolls along. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it’s assumed to be worth the veteran minimum.

Although Guyton has received minimal interest since hitting the open market at the end of the 2012 campaign, the five-year NFL veteran is an outstanding addition for the Titans.

The Titans were without three linebackers – Colin McCarthy, Zaviar Gooden and Greg Jones – during Saturday’s practice and are desperate for help and health at the position. Guyton brings short-term stability and potential production to the table.

Undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2008, Guyton spent the 2012 season bouncing around from team to team.

After signing with the Miami Dolphins in April, he was released during the preseason and subsequently landed with the Dallas Cowboys. That only lasted five days before he was sent packing. Guyton then joined the San Diego Chargers towards the end of the season and saw the field in one game.

Still only 27, Guyton brings solid production and skill to the Titans’ young linebacking corps. He was a starter for the New England Patriots from 2009-2011, during which time he racked up 195 tackles, 4.5 sacks and three interceptions in 45 appearances. While he’s a bit limited in the natural talent department, Guyton offers the type of starting experience and consistency the Titans need on the defensive side of the ball.

Chances are Guyton won’t become a starter for the Titans, but considering he likely signed for cheap, he brings tremendous value to the linebacker depth chart.

Nice signing Ruston Webster.
