Darrelle Revis Nearing Return for Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preseason; Matchup vs. Dee Milliner Week 1
Darrelle Revis, arguably the greatest defensive player of this generation, is rumored to be ready for his return for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ Week 3 preseason contest against the Miami Dolphins. ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio is reporting that the Bucs’ general manager is supporting a Week 3 return for the franchise’s prized cornerback, that is only if Revis feels ready.
“You don’t want to push,” Tampa Bay GM Mark Dominik said, via ESPN. “You want to stick with your plan. But we may want to get him on the field Week 3 of the preseason, get a few series in, get it over with, get it out of his head, so that Week 1 in New York he’s ready to go.”
A Week 3 preseason return would presumably — barring any setbacks — lay the groundwork for a Week 1 regular season Bucs debut against the New York Jets in the Meadowlands. New York dealt Revis this offseason for Tampa’s 2013 first-rounder and a conditional pick in 2014.
That 13th overall pick in 2013 would turn into projected Jets starting cornerback Dee Milliner. It will be interesting to see how the Alabama alum’s regular season debut performance compares to Revis on the other side — if they are both healthy enough to take the same field. Things are all looking good on Milliner’s side currently as well, as he’s already won the starting cornerback job opposite Antonio Cromartie.
I imagine neither franchise would pull too much morale-wise from that “head-to-head” matchup, but it would give us at least a little bit of short-term analysis for the blockbuster trade of the 2013 offseason.
