Word broke Tuesday that Darrelle Revis will be playing in Week 3 of the NFL preseason which was stunning news as many thought Revis would only play in the last preseason game if at all before the regular season starts. The news will be a huge sigh of relief from Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans who were extremely concerned that Revis would not get to put in the reps before the season as it shows his injury is healing a lot quicker than many expected.
No question Revis getting a potential two games in the preseason is gigantic for him catching up to game speed and getting acclimated back on the field. The games will hopefully allow Revis to come out of the gate at top level, because if the Bucs want to make the playoffs they are going to need a Revis that is reminiscent of the guy who won AFC Defensive Player of the Year.
This move also puts to rest a lot of the concern that Revis would not be ready to play in the showdown Week 1 against the New York Jets that everyone has been clamoring for since the NFL released the schedules. As long as there are no setbacks, Revis will not only play but will be a lot more effective with games under his belt.
The Buccaneers will be cautious, of course, not wanting to damage their biggest player commitment in a decade, but the news today clearly shows there is a comfort that Darrelle Revis is in good enough shape to test him out. The Buccaneers’ season may be resting on how that test goes.
