Does Denver Broncos’ Britton Colquitt Deserve to be Highest Paid Punter?
The Denver Broncos made Britton Colquitt the highest paid punter in the NFL for the 2013 season after they gave him a three-year, $11.7 million contract extension. It is actually a four-year, $13.023 million contract when his $1.323 million, which he was already owed, is factored in. Obviously, this is a lot of money for a punter. Does Colquitt deserve all of the money being thrown his way?
Colquitt has some impressive stats that will make any fan of the Broncos sleep better at night knowing their punter is secure. He had a gross punt average of 46.8 yards and net average of 42.1 yards last season, which ranked third in the league. He also posted a whopping 45 punts inside the 20-yard line, which was good for second in the NFL. It should be pointed out that only 27 of his 83 punts were actually returned in 2012.
In his three years with the Broncos, Colquitt is the franchise’s all-time leader in career gross punt average (46.1 yards) and net punting average (39.5 yards). He also has 79 of his 254 career punts land inside the 20-yard line with just 18 touchbacks. Even though he has only appeared in three playoff games, he has made quite the impression. Five of his 16 punts had landed inside the 20-yard line with none of them landing in the end zone.
Fans sometimes forget how valuable having a good punter truly is. There is no question Colquitt is a game changer with his ability to change the field. He is known to pin down opponents deep in their own territory, which gives Denver’s defense a great shot to put Peyton Manning and the offense in position to score.
