Geno Smith Gutting Out Ankle Injury, Helping New York Jets Move on From Mark Sanchez
Geno Smith sprained his ankle on seemingly the most simplest cuts around the corner. No one billed the West Virginiaquarterback as the most devastating runner of recent draft classes but this injury is certainly an unfortunate shock for the New York Jets.
Whether you felt New York or Smith were better off having Mark Sanchez start Week 1 of the 2013 NFL regular season, it has to be suffocating for Jets fans that Gang Green is still under Sanchez’s control. This offense has benefited from a strong offensive line and decent weapons for most of the past five years, and now New York has rapidly regressed in both regards, leaving just Sanchez, some scrubs and green skill position players to guide this offense.
“Geno Smith working with starters in team drills,” Jets beat reporter Manish Mehta tweeted earlier this week. “Noticeably gimpy on drop backs. He does not look ready.”
However, the MRI on Smith’s ankle came back negative and he’s apparently gutting it out through practices. Most pro scouts don’t exactly expect Smith to become your prototypical “running” quarterback anyways. Smith’s ability to go through progressions and inability to outrun too many defenders sculpt him closer to the pocket-passer side.
Whether it’s Rex Ryan’s weird Sanchez tattoo idea, the Smith sprained ankle or the ridiculous contract offerings of deposed general manager Mike Tannenbaum haunting this franchise, some set of circumstance always seems to plague the Jets into starting Sanchez Week 1.
This is not to say Sanchez will never succeed again, but that this relationship has become toxic and must be escaped for the both sides. Smith staying healthy only catalyzes that process.
