San Diego Chargers Rumors: How Serious Is Malcom Floyd’s injury?
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd was carted off the field today during practice with a knee injury. According to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, “Chargers fear WR Malcom Floyd tore ACL; he’s undergoing MRI tonight.”
If Floyd tore his ACL, it would be the second week in a row that San Diego will lose a WR for the season to the injury. Floyd was going to start alongside former St. Louis Rams WR Danario Alexander, who tore his ACL last week.
This would be another devastating injury for San Diego because Floyd led the NFL in yards per reception and led the Chargers in receiving yards per game in 2011. Floyd also led San Diego with 56 receptions, and ranked third on the team with five TD receptions in 2012.
According to U-T San Diego beat writer Michael Gehlken and columnist Kevin Acee, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said “I’m not saying we lost Malcom. I’m not conceding that quite yet.” Floyd has a history of injury problems, having played in all 16 regular season games only one time in his eight seasons.
Alexander tore his ACL while he was being defended by cornerback Shareece Wright, who is entering his first season as a starter. Floyd went down with his knee injury while being defended by Wright as well, but the former USC Trojans DB should not let another serious injury discourage him.
If Floyd tore his ACL or suffered a season-ending injury, San Diego could have one of the worst receiving corps in the NFL. Floyd and Alexander led San Diego with a combined 1,472 receiving yards and were on pace for 1,983 had they played in all 16 games.
San Diego ranked 22nd in receiving yards, and their 11 yards per reception ranked 30th in the league. Alexander and Floyd averaged about 18 and 15 yards per reception respectively. There was talk that San Diego could release former New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem, but a potential injury to Floyd could change those plans.
