Washington Redskins’ Defense Can’t Catch A Break

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The theme for the Washington Redskins’ defense in 2013 seems to be one step forward, two steps back. Outside linebacker Brian Orakpo has returned to his familiar right outside linebacker position. This is excellent news for the defense, considering that Orakpo is the Redskins’ best pass rusher. His return should rejuvenate a Washington defense desperately seeking a shot in the arm.

Unfortunately, that shot in the arm has apparently worn off, as adversity has reared its ugly head once again for Washington. According to nbcsports.com, rookie safety Philip Thomas will miss the entire 2013 NFL season with a torn Lisfranc ligament in his right foot. This is a serious blow to the Redskins’ secondary, considering that Thomas was expected to compete for either of the safety positions on defense.

Injury, suspension and inefficient play have placed a lot of pressure on the Redskins’ safety positions. The loss of Thomas only intensifies that pressure. Reed Doughty and DeJon Gomes are the only safeties currently on the roster that saw significant playing time for the Redskins in 2012. Both were so inefficient that Washington drafted Thomas and Bacarri Rambo to challenge them for the starting strong and free safety positions.

Brandon Meriweather is listed as the starting strong safety for 2013. He missed all but one game in 2012 due to injuries to both knees. The Redskins hope Meriweather can provide stability at strong safety with solid tackling and exceptional cover skills.

Free safety Tanard Jackson will be reinstated by the NFL before the start of the 2013 season after a year-long suspension for violating league policy on substance abuse. Thomas’ absence provides an opportunity for Jackson to make the 53-man roster in an effort to provide depth.

It’s quite possible that secondary depth could come from other teams at preseason’s end, after the final cuts and roster additions have been made. Nevertheless, injuries are an unfortunate occurrence that each team must deal with at one point or another. If Washington’s defense can’t overcome adversity, their offense will have to score 27 points per game to remain competitive like last season.

Redskins fans hope the defense can gel at the right time like last season so the team can enjoy a successful 2013.
