New Orleans Saints Continue to Finish Strong in the Preseason

New Orleans Saints Offense

Crystal LoGiudice-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have been having a great preseason thus far as they came away with their second win, a 28-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders. The Saints’ first unit looked very sharp as the team gained a huge advantage early on. However, as the starters got their rest, the second and third units let the Raiders back into the game, but the Saints were able to finish strong and secure the win.

Drew Brees was in top form as he completed 14 of 18 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. The Saints’ offense was clicking on all cylinders, but the biggest story might have been the Saints’ defense. The Saints are looking to improve on the defensive side of the ball, and if the preseason is any indication, they are well on their way.

The Saints enjoyed a 20-0 advantage at one point and the defense simply dominated an overmatched Raiders offense. Furthermore, the biggest explanation point for the defense was the seven sacks on the night, indicating a much improved pass-rush. Sure it is only the preseason, but it was nice to see the Saints pressure the quarterback and pick up so many sacks.

With so many players on the roster bubble, there was one player that continued to shine for the Saints. Wide receiver Preston Parker had another solid game as he caught two passes for 30 yards, and he also had a nice kickoff return for 26 yards. Parker is definitely making a case for a spot on the Saints’ roster, and if he keeps turning in performances like this he certainly has a good shot at making the team.

Next up for the Saints will be a road test as they travel to Houston to take on the Houston Texans. This third game will be the toughest game for the Saints so far in this preseason, and if they can pull out another win then things will certainly be looking up for the team. The Saints have had a great preseason so far so hopefully they will carry that momentum over into the regular season.
