5 Atlanta Falcons Players Who Won’t Make it Past First Round of Cuts

It’s that time again for the Atlanta Falcons…the time to make the first round of roster cuts. Not an easy time for anyone involved, especially with all the excitement around this coming season. All the players in the lineup now want to be a part of it, but soon enough a few will be on the outside looking in.

The new talent that came in did exactly what they were intended to do, and that was bring their own game as they challenged the veterans to fight to keep their own positions…particularly those who barely passed muster last year. The established army has demonstrated its ability to move outside their own comfort zones for the good of the team…hello, Kroy Biermann and Cliff Matthews, just to name a few.

However, from the draft to training camp to preseason, another aim was to not only maintain the present positives…but to fortify the Super Bowl future of the Falcons. Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford have certainly staked their respective claims as heirs to the cornerback thrones, with Trufant primed to step up immediately.

With all the necessary factors falling into place, the time has come for t3he inevitable round one elimination of those that fall outside the lines. One in particular will be upsetting if it indeed does come to pass. Don’t expect any of the first-round cuts to include any veterans; however, like they say…always expect the unexpected.

While this is by no means an all-inclusive or written-in-stone list, these five players will likely fall to the first whittling-down of the current roster…for better or worse.

With rookies Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford primed to be the future tandem, Terrence Johnson will be on his way out. He hasn’t had a lot of things go his way in the NFL, and his time with the Falcons looks to be on track to end the same way.

The time will come for Cam Henderson…cutting time, that is. With the powerhouses already in place at defensive end—including rookies Stansly Maponga and Malliciah Goodman, Cam’s talents will hopefully be utilized with another NFL team.

3. Seth Doege

With Dominique Davis improving his game and Sean Renfree more than holding his own, Seth Doege will end up on the chopping block. A necessary evil, yes…but the need won’t be there in the regular season.

2. Brian Banks

This is the one that breaks my heart the most. Rookie linebacker Brian Banks is my favorite story of the year, and I’m not the only one. However, judging from the limited time he’s getting on the preseason game field, the cut is coming…and I can only imagine it’ll be the hardest one.

1. Colin Cloherty

Tight end Colin Cloherty won’t make the cut for the Falcons, either. He made key mistakes in the game against the Baltimore Ravens, and with the depth already available—Tony Gonzalez, Chase Coffman and Levine Toilolo—there won’t be room for anything less than the best.
