When Roddy White went to the sidelines with an apparent ankle injury in the Atlanta Falcons’ Thursday night game against the Baltimore Ravens, a slight panic ensued among Falcons’ fans.

‘Slight panic’ may be an understatement as well as a contradiction in terms, but once an injury story starts it takes on a life of its own. Even more so in this day and age, when the injured party is a major player and the social media revolution is involved in spreading the news. True to form, the White injury story changed as it spread on the social media outlets…from foot injury to high-ankle sprain that would keep him out of the first regular season game at the least. However, the truth in this case lies on the outskirts…as opposed to somewhere in between. White suffered a low-ankle sprain, which isn’t considered major even though healing time is needed.

In the preseason interim, look for Julio Jones to continue to step up, as well as Harry Douglas and Drew Davis. Douglas and Davis will certainly continue to take advantage of the playing time, and they’ve both made good showings. Either way, preseason is still preseason, and White will be fine. He could easily sit out the rest of the preseason and be fully ready to go for game one of the regular season. But will he sit out? Not if he has anything to say about it.

The bottom line is this: Any injury, no matter how minor, is not good. The injury occurring during the preseason with time allowed to heal before the regular season kicks in? Not a good deal, but better than the alternative. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, White will be ready to deliver.
