He’s back.

Tony Gonzalez is at long last returning to the Atlanta Falcons, and back to the field in next Saturday night’s game against the Tennessee Titans.

It’s only been two preseason games, so ‘at long last’ may be a bit overdramatic…but only just. The third preseason game is generally when Falcons head coach Mike Smith likes to get the majority of his starters together on the field, so Gonzalez is back just in time.

Gonzalez’s absence from part of training camp and the preseason to date naturally raised questions that continue even now. However, the time off was planned and approved for prior family commitments (which included the start of his son’s youth football career), but Gonzalez has definitely been missed. And he’s missed his team as well, as evidenced with his own words: “It’s time for me to get back there. I need to get some work with Matt (Ryan) and the offense. I’m excited.”

So are we, Tony. So are we.

Ironically enough, Gonzalez made another debut this morning before his return to the field next Saturday night…in a cartoon on the Nickelodeon channel. The cartoon is a series on Nickelodeon named NFL Rush Zone: Guardians Unleashed, and the focus is on the guardians who must protect power sources known as ‘Megacores’ at the NFL stadiums. That’ll be one for the kids to watch, absolutely…and probably some of the adults as well. That being said (and watched), I don’t think I’m alone in looking more forward to his on-field preseason debut against the Titans.

Bring it on home, Tony…and onto the field. The last hoorah awaits…and it may end with a Super Bowl victory.
