Jairus Byrd Signs One-Year Franchise Tender with Buffalo Bills
It has just been announced that star free-safety Jairus Byrd signed his franchise tender that was given to him by the Buffalo Bills and will make $6,916,000 in 2013. Byrd is considered one of if not the best free safety in the NFL. He has been an absolute ball hawk since coming into the league in 2009, as he has had 18 interceptions, nine of which came in his rookie year as he was tied for the league lead that year and returned two of them for touchdowns. While this was under defenses that didn’t cause much pressure, and it’s entirely possible that he could have a huge year as the new look Bills defense under defensive coordinator Mike Pettine Jr. has been terrorizing teams with relentless pressure and mass confusion and combine that with the aforementioned ball hawking of Byrd, teams could be in for a long day when they come into Orchard Park, New York and play at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Byrd was a converted college cornerback that ran a slow (4.60) 40-yard dash time in which his switch to safety was nearly immediately after the Bills drafted him. Despite he slow 40 time, scouts raved about his hands and abilities to be a game changer on a defense and was an absolute steal at the 42nd pick in the NFL draft.
All and all, this could be extremely good news for the Buffalo Bills and its fan base as it’s been waiting to see Jairus Byrd back in uniform sooner than later as some people figured he’d hold out most of the season. After this season, it is all but assured that Byrd will cash-in big time either from the Bills or another team that will likely make him the richest safety in the entire league.
