Seattle Seahawks Roster Moves: The Impact of the Jordan Hill Injury

Injuries are part of the violent NFL existence, and the Seattle Seahawks have lost their fair share this summer. The latest to go down is rookie defensive tackle Jordan Hill, who could be out 3-6 weeks with a partially torn bicep. That doesn’t sound very comfortable.

Speculation was that Hill might work his way into the starting lineup, or at least be one of first linemen off the bench. Will this injury put in a dent in Seattle’s Super Bowl hopes?

In a word, no. First of all, 3-6 weeks is not a ridiculously long time period of time in the NFL. We aren’t talking Percy Harvin time. It certainly isn’t an ideal situation, but Hill could be back as early as the third week of the season. Hopefully the Seahawks will be 2-0 by then.

The Seahawks do have some additional concerns on the line, as both Jesse Williams and Tony McDaniel have missed some practice time due to injury. Chris Clemons is still out, Cliff Avril has missed some time and Bruce Irvin is going to be suspended for four weeks. In particular, the Seahawks would love to see McDaniel and his 6-foot-7, 305-pound frame be a force in the middle this season.

The Seahawks are “stockpiling” defensive linemen. One does have to wonder if this is a move to strengthen depth or address deeper concerns about the health of the current roster.

An effective defense still starts with the ability of the line to put pressure on the quarterback and contain the run. Seattle has a number of options and will likely give opponents a lot of different looks. However, none of that will be as effective as basic health.

The clock is ticking and the season is approaching fast. It is time for the Seahawks to get healthy.
