5 San Diego Chargers Players Poised to Become Stars in 2013
San Diego Chargers: 5 Players Poised for Stardom in 2013 NFL Season
It wasn’t all that long ago that the San Diego Chargers had a roster that was absolutely littered with stars. Those days might be a thing of the past entering the 2013 season, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay gone as the year moves along.
The Bolts are a team in transition, but there is some real hesitance to call it rebuilding. There are some serious foundational blocks in place for this team to get back to an elite level in a hurry, but they need some of their younger players to develop into stars for that to happen.
A new coaching staff and front office with Mike McCoy and Tom Telesco will give this team a fresh vibe heading into the upcoming season. Developing players in their 20s are all over this roster, so although they have been a disappointment in terms of wins and losses it hasn’t been due to a lack of talent.
That being said, getting that talent to develop into star-caliber players is much easier said than done. The work that is done away from the field when no one is watching is what really improves the product seen on game-day, but sometimes that isn’t enough. The Chargers will need some good fortune for these stars to really shine in the 2013 season.
Some of the guys in the following slides are players expected to arrive soon and others may have tempered expectations to some extent. Regardless of the presumed potential that each of these guys has, these five players are ready to become NFL stars in 2013 if the Chargers will only let them.
5. Manti Te'o, LB
So I know Manti Te’o is already a star by Notre Dame and TMZ standards, but he will officially become an NFL star in 2013. Even as a rookie, Te’o has instincts that will translate easily into the league and make him a real force at inside linebacker. Alongside Donald Butler, these two tackling machines will clean up anything that the Bolts’ stellar defensive front doesn’t finish off.
4. Kendall Reyes, DE
Speaking of that stellar defensive front, Kendall Reyes is primed to have a serious breakout in his second season. He burst onto the scene near the end of last year with a 3.5 sack performance against the New York Jets, but that could become a regular occurrence with this freak of nature. He will constantly have one-on-one matchups thanks to the other talent on the San Diego defensive front, and that should lead to big numbers for Reyes this season.
3. Corey Liuget, DE
That talented front that I mentioned in the previous slide segues beautifully into Corey Liuget and his impressive play-making abilities. Liuget finished second to J.J. Watt in deflected passes by a defensive lineman which says something about his instincts. He shed eight pounds in the offseason to get a bit lighter on his feet and quicker in the trenches to turn offensive linemen into pylons on the regular. Look for Liuget to really have a coming out party this season with the Bolts.
2. Vincent Brown, WR
I know what you’re thinking – finally an offensive player! Vincent Brown was supposed to have his breakout year in 2012, but a broken ankle in the preseason derailed those plans. This year sets up even better for the receiver with all of the injuries that the team has been dealing with on the outside. Brown and quarterback Philip Rivers have quite a rapport, and that will translate into big things out on the field this year.
1. Ladarius Green, TE
Something tells me that it isn’t time to shovel dirt on Antonio Gates just yet, but Ladarius Green is ready to make some noise this season. With two tight end sets becoming all the rage in the NFL recently, Green’s 6-foot-6, 240-pound frame is oozing with potential that could easily make him the next Jimmy Graham in the league. He came from small school Louisiana-Lafayette which is why he has been brought along slowly, but his seven catches for 107 yards and two scores through the first two preseason games may just be the tip of the iceberg for this talented tight end.
