2013 Fantasy Football Sleeper: Carolina Panthers Tight End Greg Olsen
It’s that time, folks. Plenty of people are getting started with their final preparation in hopes of a championship season in their respective fantasy football leagues. The toughest part of that preparation is to decide which guys may be sleepers and out of those sleepers, which ones are worth drafting.
With all of the focus on the most important position, running back, sometimes we forget about those guys that have potential to contribute at a spot like tight end. Outside of a couple guys, there are not many elite tight ends worth selecting too high up in the draft. For that reason, a lot of people will leave the tight end until one of their later picks, for example anywhere from the rounds 7-11.
As I will continue to say this year, it is imperative that you take your running backs early and choose your wide receivers carefully, but also a bit early. Tight end is a spot that you can wait on and maybe try to grab a sleeper.
Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen is entering his third season with the team as is his quarterback Cam Newton. From his first season with Olsen, Newton has found his tight end to be more of a security blanket at times and the chemistry has continued to develop at a high level.
In their first season together, Newton targeted Olsen 90 times, with 45 of those resulting in catches for a total of 540 yards and five touchdowns. In 2012, Newton targeted Olsen 104 times with 69 of those being catches. This time, his yardage ended at a healthy 843 yards and again he caught five scores.
With so much pressure on Newton to perform better than ever this year, I think he looks for Olsen even more now that he’s proved to trust him more than ever. Olsen still possesses the speed and athleticism that he’s had over the years and is finally turning into the type of tight end he was always thought to be with the Chicago Bears.
If Olsen is still available in those later rounds, he could be a sneaky pickup for anybody looking for consistency at the position throughout the year. Newton and Olsen will be a formidable duo in 2013, more than ever, and the former Miami standout could have his best season yet.
