Houston Texans: What Is Wrong With Your Team?

Matt Schaub Houston Texans

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans started off the 2012 season as one of the best teams in the NFL. With an 11-1 record, the Texans had the best record in the AFC heading in to Week 14. They then got thrashed on Monday Night Football at the hands of Tom Brady and the explosive New England Patriots 42-14 and finished the regular season losing three of their last four games, with a record of 12-4.

Their 12-4 record made the Texans the No. 3 seed in the AFC for the playoffs, meaning they did not get the first round bye. In the wildcard round, they rode running back Arian Foster to a 19-13 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. The season ended for Houston the next week as they lost to the Patriots once again 41-28 in the divisional round.

With Foster and a ferocious defense led by 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, the Texans have the makings of a traditional smash mouth football team. The only problem is, the NFL is a passing league. It is rare that teams win championships by playing great defense and running the ball. Not saying it cannot happen, but it is much more unlikely now than in the past.

The Texans have talent across the board, but the biggest thing that is wrong with this team is the quarterback play. Matt Schaub is a solid NFL quarterback. Last season he threw for 4,008 yards, 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Let’s be honest; 4,000 yards passing is not what it used to be. Those are average numbers in this day and age. Schaub is not going to lose you many games, but he is not going to win you many either.

Houston has one of the most talented defenses in the league and Foster has been a productive workhorse back for the past few seasons. That being said, if they want to become legitimate Super Bowl contenders, they must get more out of  Schaub and the passing game. Old-school football fans may not like it, but “three yards and a cloud of dust” simply does not get it done anymore.

Watch Chiefs' Smith Hit Conley For Huge TD

Right before this touchdown, Jeremy Maclin may have suffered a serious knee injury, which means the Chiefs are going to need more of this out of the rookie Chris Conley. With a 20-0 lead, the Chiefs will likely advance to the AFC Divisional Round next week.

Texans Actually Tried J.J. Watt At QB

There's something to be said for pulling out all the stops and using every trick play in the book to win a playoff game, but bringing in J.J. Watt to play quarterback in the wildcat formation was probably a giveaway that he would be running the ball.
