During the offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to go out and spend a good amount of money on free agents which is something they obviously aren’t shy about.
One of those free agents was TE James Casey who came over from the Houston Texans. Casey was expected to come in and give Chip Kelly another offensive weapon and a good red zone target to use. It’s clearly way too early to criticize Casey, but he simply has not been the standout guy that the fans hoped he would be so far.
Casey is a very athletic and versatile tight end that can be used in a lot of different ways. The Texans used him as a fullback a lot of the time to give them more of an offensive weapon in the passing game. Casey could also be lined up in the slot to take advantage of the smaller nickel cornerbacks. Yet we have not seen the Eagles do any of this while Casey has been in the game. So this leads to the question, what’s the deal with Casey?
In the three preseason games, Casey has only one catch for three yards, and that came when the Eagles faced the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday. Casey the fewest receptions and yardage out of all of the Eagles’ tight ends. Brent Celek has seven catches for 70 yards, Zach Ertz has five catches for 54 yards, and even Clay Harbor has three catches for 47 yards. It seems like Casey has not been on the same page as the rest of the offense, and it even looks like Ertz is taking over the second tight end position.
We all know it’s still the preseason, but the regular season is two weeks away and Casey seems like he will be the third tight end on the depth chart. Casey can still be a valuable asset to the Eagles’ offense, but he’ll need to prove to the coaches he can do that since we are approaching Week 1.
Since most of the starters will be taking a sit for the last preseason game look for Casey to get a lot of time this Thursday against the New York Jets. With Nick Foles and Matt Barkley taking all of the reps at the quarterback position, they may look at Casey a lot throughout the game. This match-up may be what Casey needs to find his groove and get his feet wet before the regular season begins.
Casey can help this offense score points. However, it seems like he may be struggling since he hasn’t seen too much action this preseason. Hopefully he finds he’s rhythm soon or else he won’t see a lot of time this year.
