Baltimore Ravens Have A Big Decision For Final RB Spot

The final preseason game for the Baltimore Ravens this Thursday night against the St. Louis Rams will be very important for several bubble players. As far as the No. 3 RB spot goes, that’s a three man race between Anthony Allen, Bobby Rainey, and newly signed Delone Carter. Due to Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce being locks in addition to fullbacks Vonta Leach and Kyle Juzszcyk, the chances of even two of those guys making the team are non-existent.

Allen was the No. 3 back last season mostly because of his great play on special teams. I’ve never really been of fan of Allen as a running back, but I must admit he’s had a burst this preseason that I haven’t seen previously. He even made a really nice catch which was surprising because the guy has hands of stone. Tyrod Taylor finally won me over this preseason and Allen semi won me over I suppose.

Rainey is definitely the most explosive of the three backs as he shares some similarities to Rice. Rainey has also shined as a kick/punt returner this preseason. Having other options in the return game would be good for the Ravens if they plan on using Jacoby Jones more in the passing game.

Carter has yet to take a snap with the Ravens as he was only acquired in a trade from the Indianapolis Colts less then a week ago. He is a bigger back who could be useful in short yardage and goal line situations.

I believe ultimately the last spot comes down to Allen and Carter. Rainey will likely be stashed away on the practice squad again. My official prediction is Allen because of his contributions on special teams. Needless to say it will be an interesting battle to watch this Thursday Night.
