The stage is now set for the Monday Night Football opener. Robert Griffin III will make his return from ACL surgery with the Washington Redskins to take on Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. This is clearly the matchup the NFL had in mind when they scheduled this game and now their wish has come true.

I fully expect the Redskins to be favored in this game, given that they were a playoff team in 2012 and that the Eagles were far from one. But with RG3 figuring to be a little rusty, this should be a golden opportunity for Vick to shine. It will be the debut of the Chip Kelly-led Eagles and the new look squad will have a chance right out of the gate to make a statement.

Many are questioning whether Kelly’s offense can successfully translate to the NFL, which is fair. College-style systems traditionally haven’t worked at the next level, but I believe Kelly has the right guy behind center to make it work. Vick’s mobility and maturity as a quarterback made him the man for the job and now he needs to set the tone early on that it’s his job going forward.

If Vick and the Eagles can get off to a great start and somehow pull off an upset road victory, it would change the outlook of their entire 2013 season.

We’ll find out how good RG3 really is in the MNF opener. If he can upstage Vick on his way to a victory, it will speak volumes about his greatness. But on the flip side, if Vick can shine, it will do wonders for his career and his team. But if I had to place a bet, the safe money is still with RG3.
