Is Jerry Jones’ Comparison of Tony Romo to Sean Payton Accurate?
When Tony Romo signed his hefty contract this offseason, Jerry Jones said that he expects Romo to put in Peyton Manning type time. Now Jones is comparing Romo to Payton again, but not the quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Jones compared Romo’s offensive mindset to that of Sean Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints.
If you remember way back to 2003 when Bill Parcells was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and Romo was signed as an undrafted free agent, Sean Payton was the offensive coordinator of the Cowboys. For his first two years in the NFL, Romo was Payton’s “project” and it was Payton who molded Romo into the quarterback that he has become.
According to ESPN.com, Jerry Jones has said that, “Tony Romo’s offensive mind is like that of Sean Payton.” Jones further elaborated saying that “Romo is a risk taker like Payton.” Well, if Romo’s offensive mind is anything like that of Sean Payton, I think the Cowboys are in for a pleasant surprise this season. Let’s not forget that when Payton took over as the Saints head coach in 2006, he took a team with just three wins in the previous season and turned them into playoff contenders.
If Romo’s game planning and play calling ability are anything like that of Payton, I think we are going to see the Cowboys take it to the next level. This offense already has the weapons they just need to utilize their strengths, and I think Romo is going to use his experience in this league to maximize the potential of his teammates.
