Take one look around the JUGS machine. You will be sure to see Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant practicing catching the football with his hands everyday after practice.
Despite having unquestionably the best hands on the team, Avant still works on his craft hours every day to perfect the skill. It is this sort of work ethic as a veteran leader that has led to a few young receivers being taken under his wing early on in camp. Avant is a true professional, a steady veteran that comes to work every day and does his job.
Avant has always been a reliable receiver, especially as a security blanket on third down. He may not be the fastest or most explosive, but he is so crafty with his jukes and hesitations in the slot that he eats linebackers alive and out maneuvers slot corners. Those two traits that have made him successful as an inside receiver.
Avant has always been a receiver quarterback Michael Vick has looked to when things are breaking down or for a crucial third down conversion. That will be no different this season. Blocking is also an essential trait for a Chip Kelly wide receiver, and Avant may be the best blocking wide receiver on the team.
There had been a bit of speculation earlier in the offseason that Avant was on the trading block. I always thought this was crazy. He has been so steady and reliable for the Eagles for so many years and never drops the ball when it comes to him. Avant could be used in a way by Kelly he hasn’t been used before as all receivers are asked to play multiple positions.
Look for a big year from Avant in 2013.
